A Forthright Question to Colleen Uplifts

Eve teasing, the sexual harassment of women in public areas by men, has been identified as a significant community problem all over the world for ages.

The book ‘Wonder Womaniya’ by Dr. Sohil Makwana has shed light on the struggles that women face in the society as he rightly mentioned in the book “Na tum jaano na hum, fir bhi I’ll judge you like your mum - that’s the definition of society.” He is blessed with detailed storytelling and whimsical humors which kept the audience captivated on the same page. The story begins with a stand-up comedian addressing Inter-National Women’s Day at the Connaught Hall, Jhansi and for the woman of the decade award, Ambika’s journey was narrated.

Ambika lives in the Jhansi with her sweet- small family until she married to Amar who is from a Brahmin’s family. Her 3 goals in life since her childhood- mysterious M3- Memes, Momos and Munnas. (Memes banane ke… Momos khane ke… Aur bahot sare munno ki maa banana ka), has shattered in the process of her marriage. She faces caste discrimination in her marriage and Amar leaves her due to her infertility issue. As author has mentioned “Love is blind, but friendship opens the eyes. The remedy of thousand poisons is a best friend. Aur wo dost hi kya jo musibat main na kaam aaye…!” and Janki, her friend forever came for the rescue in helping her in restarting her life as a nurse in a district hospital. However, misfortune didn’t cast her when she was diagnosed with a bizarre disease- a tumor in a pituitary gland which secretes excess prolactin hormone as a case in Prolactinoma. Her video featuring her in white screen-blouse with a blot on her 'escutcheon' goes viral online. The bizarre disease emerged as a blessing in a disguise, and she served mankind for years by opening ‘The Milky Way’ milk bank and expanded it to three different cities along with the MilkPhone mobile application. I was unsure about the belief of Purane jamane main Bharat Vardh main doodh ki naadiyaan bahti thi, but the wonder Wominiya… The Woman of the Decade… The Lagen-dairy… The Milk Goddess… Sab ki maa… Miss Ambika has made it happen in a recent time.

The story has a simple plot but has narrated an untold tale. It was very beautifully written with the combination of medical intellect and creativity. How the author is able to introduce bizarre disease to the audience with the help of humanized and demystified characters. The contemporary fiction of Hinglish has so many punch lines in Hindi giving it a unique desi taste of Indian culture. For instance, “Crush or brush dono time pe badal lene chahiye, Kyoki agar crush nahi badloge to dil toot jayega… Aur brush nahi badloge to brush toot jayega....” And the another one “Aur muujhe ek baat samaj nahi aati… Jab sabki maa itni pyari hoti hai, toh ye khatarnak saas kahan se aati hai?”. There are sarcastic scripts rolled up in a bitter truth of Indian society are thrown away to readers which made the overall experience of book, worthwhile to read. The inspiring story of woman empowerment was truly a masterpiece.

One should read this once in a life time especially all the men who needs to understand the struggles that all women go through. Overall, it’s an easy read… Hope you enjoy this beautiful magic story of 200 pages.
